Choosing pumpkins in the field where they grew makes for a fine family outing during the harvest season. Any pumpkin aficionado knows there are few pleasures equivalent to scrutinizing a field, stalking the perfect specimen. Selecting a Christmas tree is similar and of course very delightful, but in some ways, pumpkin picking is even better since you can easily justify having as many pumpkins as you like… Naturally, the pumpkins are superb for Halloween carving, but if you want to keep one or two or three around simply because they’re so handsome, they can last unblemished for months. And many of our pumpkin varieties are delicious for eating as well!
We came up with the notion of Lavender Hill Pumpkins with families in mind. We'd done a couple of decades of vegetable gardening while our family grew, every year producing enough pumpkins-- along with the corn and snow peas-- so that each member of the family had at least one whopper to carve come October. We thought it would be very nice to see other children and their parents scouting about in an autumn field, and so here you have it: Lavender Hill Pumpkins. In the past, professional clients have reserved a dozen or more massive pumpkins at a time for corporate displays. Many of our most loyal customers are from nearby Camp Pendleton. Some Marines come with their families, but many are alone, their people in North Dakota, Louisiana, Montana or New Jersey. They make the drive over from the base to choose a pumpkin in the field, just the way they did back home.
